The Power of Company Directors Directors of companies have substantial power and onerous duties, and their decisions (or their failure to take decisions) can have a similar impact to those of governments. "Some companies have a higher turnover than the GDP of some countries," says Institute of Directors in Southern Africa CEO Ansie Ramalho. "Such economic power could be exercised positively by generating wealth - but it can also be negative, as in the global financial crisis, BP's Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, and the Fidentia scandal in SA."
