The Institute of Directors in London established a branch in South Africa to canvass the business community to join the London institute.
Harry Oppenheimer was appointed as the first President.
1960-1970
Membership grows from 450 to 1319.
1985
The IoDSA was incorporated as a Section 21 company under the Companies Act, 1973.
The number of members grew to 1480.
Basil Hersov was appointed as President.
1986
The IoDSA took up premises, for its first offices, at Suite 102, Van Leer House, 15 Wellington Road, Parktown, Johannesburg.
The initial rent amounts to R14.70 per month!
1991
The first Chief Executive of the IoDSA was appointed, Richard Wilkinson.
1992
The IoDSA Council approached Prof. Mervyn King with a mandate to form a committee responsible for drafting guidance on corporate governance for South Africa.
The King Committee was established under the auspices of the IoDSA. The IoDSA provides financial and human resources; as well as administrative and operational infrastructure (which it continues to do).
1994
The first King Report on Corporate Governance (King I) was issued and the King Committee assigned ownership of this and future reports to the IoDSA.
2001
The IoDSA established a Director Development service offering.
Reuel Khoza was appointed President, with Mervyn King as First Vice President. (Both continue to serve in these positions till present day)
2002
The second King Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa (King II) was issued at a conference at the Sandton Convention Centre attended by 700 people on 26 March 2002.
2003
Membership grew to 3000.
2004
Tony Dixon was appointed as CEO.
2008
Lindie Engelbrecht was appointed as CEO.
2009
The third King Report on Governance for South Africa (King III) was issued in September at a conference at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The IoDSA started facilitating board appraisal services.
As it evolved to become an independent institute in its own right, the IoDSA ended its formal affiliation under the IoD UK in favour of a relationship between equals. New branding was adopted to evidence this newly established identity.
2010
At the AGM a new Memorandum of Incorporation was adopted by members in terms of which governance is vested in a board of directors instead of a Council.
Ansie Ramalho was appointed as CEO.
2011
The milestone of 5000 members is reached.
2012
The IoDSA was awarded status as a professional body for directors by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
Richard Foster was appointed as Chair of the IoDSA Board.
2013
The IoDSA launched the Chartered Director (South Africa) designation.
2014
The King Committee and IoDSA make the decision to embark on the drafting of King IV.
Ansie Ramalho stepped down as CEO of the IoDSA, in order to be the King IV project lead.
Angela Oosthuizen was appointed as CEO.
Ended the year with just over 7000 members.
2015
Milestone of 7500 members reached.
Venete Klein was appointed as Chair of the IoDSA Board.
2016
The IoDSA launched the King IV Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa on 1 November 2016 at a conference of over 1400 delegates at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The King IV Report was also launched on a mobile platform, the first of its kind.
2017
Milestone of 8500 members was reached.
IoDSA elected as chair of the Global Network of Director Institutes.
The Certified Director designation was launched.
IoDSA won the IRMSA "Risk Influencer of the Year" award.
Prieur du Plessis was appointed as Chair of the IoDSA Board.
2018
Milestone of 9000 members was reached.
2019
Parmi Natesan was appointed as CEO.
Muhammad Seedat was appointed as Chair of the IoDSA Board.
Name change to Institute of Directors in South Africa (from previous reference to "Southern Africa") to better reflect the IoDSA's main area of operation and influence.
2020
IoDSA celebrates its 60th anniversary.
IoDSA launched director development on digital platforms making programmes accessible throughout South Africa and Southern Africa.
IoDSA launched Boardroom Bytes@9 webinar series.
IoDSA won the Integrated Reporting Award in the NPO category for its 2019 Integrated Report.
2021
IoDSA won the 2021 Integrated Reporting Awards in the NPO category by Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa.
IoDSA won the Business of the Year 2021 by Standard Bank Top Women Awards.

IoDSA won Most Ethical Corporate Governance and Effective Leadership in South Africa 2022 by World Business Outlook.
