  • The Institute of Directors in London established a branch in South Africa to canvass the business community to join the London institute 


  • Membership grows from 450 to 1319


  • The IoDSA was incorporated as a Section 21 company under the Companies Act, 1973
  • The number of members grew to 1480


  • The IoDSA takes up premises for its first offices at Suite 102, Van Leer House, 15 Wellington Road, Parktown, Johannesburg.
  • The initial rent amounts to R14.70 per month!


  • The first Chief Executive of the IoDSA is appointed


  • The IoDSA Council approaches Prof. Mervyn King with a mandate to form a committee responsible for drafting of guidance on corporate governance for South Africa.
  • The IoDSA serves as a secretariat for the King Committee


  • The first King Report on Corporate Governance (King I) is issued and the King Committee assigns ownership of this and future reports to the IoDSA


  • The IoDSA establishes a Director Development service offering


  • The second King Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa (King II) is issued at a conference at the Sandton Convention Centre


  • Membership grew to 3000


  • The third King Report on Governance for South Africa (King III) is issued in September at a conference at the Sandton Convention Centre
  • The IoDSA also starts facilitating board appraisal services
  • As it evolved to become an independent institute in its own right, the IoDSA ends its formal affiliation under the IoD UK in favour of a relationship between equals. New branding is adopted to evidence this newly established identity


  • At the AGM new Articles of Association are adopted by members in terms of which governance is vested in a board of directors instead of Council
  • Also in 2010, the Governance Assessment Instrument (GAI), a software tool that assist companies and other entities and organisations to implement, assess and report on the application of King III, is made available


  • The Code for Responsible Investing in South Africa (CRISA) is launched. The CRISA committee has been convened by the IoDSA and the IoDSA serves as its secretariat
  • The milestone of 5000 members is reached


  • The IoDSA is awarded status as professional body for directors by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)


  • The IoDSA launches the Chartered Director (South Africa) designation


  • The IoDSA launches the King IV Report at a conference of over 1400 delegates at the Sandton Convention Centre
  • The King IV Report was also launched on a mobile platform, the first of its kind


  • Milestone of 8500 members is reached
  • Development of new member app
  • SA chairs GNDI International forum
  • Re-launch of Certified Director


  • Milestone of 9000 members is reached


  • Name change to Institute of Directors in South Africa
