The Board is the custodian of corporate governance in an organisation. One of their key responsibilities is to approve the organisation’s strategy and monitor its implementation by management to ensure that value is created in the short, medium and long term. To do this, they need to understand and have effective oversight of the techniques, processes and systems used by management to manage performance.

Effective Boards are therefore concerned about performance at two levels:

1. Their own performance as the custodians of corporate governance;

2. Implementation of the organisation’s strategy by management.

This snapshot session has been designed to help Boards understand the essentials of performance management at both levels and the steps they should take to maximise their effectiveness.

Key Focus Areas

  • Understanding the scope and purpose of performance management
  • Ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities
  • Understanding how performance management techniques can help Boards to maximise the organisation’s and their own performance
  • Understanding that effective organisational performance management is a prerequisite for performance related pay
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of the Board
