Across the world there is growing interest in establishing effective stakeholder relationships for company performance and valuation. In a rapidly changing world, investors increasingly seek ‘lead indicators'; information on relationships with stakeholders such as customers, suppliers and regulators are key to estimating future profitability. In addition, boards in South Africa are required under King III to report on quality and strength of stakeholder relationships for corporate governance purposes. This workshop on the theme of ‘The Relational Director' explores not just why it is important to measure stakeholder relationships but also how this can best be achieved. This is an opportunity for board members to engage at a deeper level with the stakeholder agenda so as to better fulfil their responsibilities.

Speakers
Dr Michael Schluter
Michael Schluter trained as an economist in the US and worked as a consultant with the World Bank in East Africa. He has launched a number of not-for-profit organisations dealing with international peace-building, consumer credit and debt, and the analysis and measurement of relationships. He is co-author of The R Factor (1993) and The Relational Manager (September 2009), amongst other books. After founding Relationships Global in 2009, Michael spoke at the launch of King III in Johannesburg regarding the importance of Chapter 8. In 2010-11 Michael worked with a South African company to pilot the use of tools to measure stakeholder relationships in five large corporates in South Africa.

Ncaba Hlophe
Ncaba Hlophe worked as a financial journalist for Business Report between 1997 and 1999 followed by a brief stint in public relations before joining BMI-T between 2000 and 2002 as a market research and telecommunications policy analyst. He joined MTN South Africa as National Public Sector Sales Manager his last job in formal employment. Since 2005, he has dabbled in several entrepreneurial ventures including machine-to-machine (M2M) and real time sports information update both of which leveraged mobile technology to deliver real time intelligence.
A sales consulting contract by MTN South Africa to complete the implementation of his public sector strategy provided the platform to launch consulting entrepreneurial ventures in sales strategy and reputation management. As part of the reputation consulting work, he pioneered the interpretation of Relational Proximity developed by Dr Michael Schluter as an appropriate framework for measurement and reporting on stakeholder relationships in response to corporate governance requirements espoused in King III. He co-founded Strategic Relationships Assessments (SRA) which led a project in 2011 undertaken in conjunction with RelationshipsGlobal with the support of the IODSA featuring five top companies to pilot Relational Proximity in the South African environment.

About the Chairman and panellists

Dr Reuel Khoza

Currently Chairman of Aka Capital (Pty) Limited, Nedbank Group Ltd, Director of several companies in which Aka Capital (Pty) Ltd has invested, including Nampak Ltd. and Old Mutual plc. Co-author of the Power of Governance. Author of Let Africa Lead and Attuned Leadership. As Chairman of the Nepad Business Foundation initiated the establishment of the African Leadership Development Programme jointly run by the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and the Nepad Business Foundation (NBF).

Currently Fellow and President of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa.

Neil Morris

Neil is qualified as a Chartered Accountant in South Africa and has 14 years experience with KPMG in the profession in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

He is currently the director of Climate Change and Sustainability Services and focuses on Sustainability Assurance, Climate Change Advisory solutions, Integrated Reporting and Stakeholder engagement.

Neil is a member of the South African Integrated Reporting working group responsible for drafting the discussion paper "Framework for integrated reporting and the integrated report”. He is also the Chairman of the IRBA Sustainability Standing Committee and Chairman of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) Technical Collaboration Group for Assurance.

Ansie Ramalho

Ansie was appointed as Executive Director: Centre of Corporate Governance at the Institute of Directors Southern Africa (IoDSA) in June 2008. Prior to joining the IoDSA she was an associate director at KPMG, specialising in corporate governance after having attained 10 years' experience in insolvencies and formal restructuring of companies. Here she gained full cycle knowledge of corporate governance requirements and the consequences of the failure to adhere thereto. Ansie has in depth knowledge of corporate governance standards as well as directors' duties and responsibilities and exposure to personal liability. She has a sound understanding of South African corporate legislation and the Companies Bill an understanding of general risk management and controls to ensure regulatory and legislative compliance controls. She is knowledgeable in the establishment of an ethics framework and the administration of formal restructuring assignments and exit strategies. Ansie gained extensive experience in the corporate restructuring and recovery environment, her assignments included the Saambou Bank receivership and the Kebble insolvency in respect of both of which she played a key role. In terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act Ansie has experience in deceased estates and assets forfeitures.
