Audit committees in South Africa have long since recognised that effective
corporate governance is the cornerstone of shareholder protection. The building
blocks of an effective audit committee, from an effective agenda and committee
structure to a keen awareness of current and emerging issues, are fundamental in
fulfilling the audit committees responsibilities.
It is to this end that the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa
established the Audit Committee Forum, which aims to assist members to be
effective in their roles on audit committees through sharing knowledge with
their peers, disseminating relevant information and focussing on key performance
areas, thereby contributing to the effective governance and sustainability of
their organisations and enhancing the economic environment of South Africa.
An Audit Committee Working Group was formed as a small working group to act
as a technical resource or sounding board for current issues. Information, where
relevant to an audit committees responsibilities, relating to governance, risk
management, auditing, accounting and financial reporting, current issues, future
changes and international developments is researched, discussed and debated by
the Working Group in the preparation formal topical position papers.
